That question changed everything for us. It's the reason VESL exists — and once you hear the answer, you can't go back to ignoring it.
Founded by wellness industry veterans · Advised by Stanford researchers
Before VESL, we built a company in the sleep space. The premise was simple: sleep is a basic human need that most people underinvest in. We spent years helping people improve something they do every single day without thinking about it.
Water was the natural next step.
It started at home. One of our founders was moving into a new house when his wife suggested installing a whole-house water filtration system. His first reaction was the same one most people have: why would I filter anything beyond what I drink?
"You filter what you drink. But the water that touches your skin and lungs for ten minutes every day — that you just accept."
Municipal water treatment adds chlorine to kill bacteria — that's necessary. But the chlorine stays in your water all the way to your showerhead. When you turn on a hot shower, it becomes a gas you're breathing in. Hot water opens your pores, and your skin absorbs what's in the water more readily than your stomach would from a glass.
Once we understood that, we couldn't stop thinking about it. For six years — through another company, through careers in wellness — the question kept coming back. We watched an entire category form around the idea. And we kept seeing the same problem.
Every filtered showerhead on the market fell into one of two categories. Expensive and overpromising — lifestyle brands charging $165 for a showerhead and $38 per filter, selling the dream of perfect skin and hair without telling you what's actually in the filter. Or cheap and disposable — generic products with vague claims, mystery filter media, and no accountability.
Nobody was building a product that was both good and affordable. Nobody was naming every ingredient in the filter and explaining why it was there. Nobody was treating this like the engineering problem it actually is.
So we built VESL.
We designed a filter with five filtration media, each targeting a specific class of contaminant. We'll tell you exactly what each one does — and what it doesn't. We partnered with researchers to develop a third-party testing protocol. And we priced it so filtering your shower water doesn't require a luxury budget.
We tell you exactly what our filter does and what it doesn't. We don't claim to purify your water or eliminate all impurities. We don't make before-and-after promises we can't document. We're building a brand, not a campaign — for people with high standards about what they put in and on their bodies.
A showerhead without consistent filter replacement is just a showerhead. The filtration media is what does the work. We designed our replacement model around the reality that a filter only works if you actually change it — every 90 days, on a schedule that's easy to maintain.
Our scientific advisor is a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford with a PhD from MIT in Chemical Engineering. He designed our testing protocol and advises on filter media selection — not for a press release, but to make sure every claim we put on this site can be documented in a lab. Most brands in this category start with a marketing angle and work backward to the product. We started with the science.
