Chlorine, hard minerals, and dissolved metals hit your skin daily — pores open, lungs pulling steam. These aren't skincare transformations. They're what happens when you remove the irritants at the source.
Dr. TJ Joo (PhD Chemical Engineering, MIT · Postdoc, Stanford) advised on the design of our filtration system — lending his expertise in grain size distribution, media sequencing, and contact time ratios that most brands never think about. Same performance as premium competitors. 70% lower cost because there's no retail chain.
Independent analysis of filtration specifications shows VESL matches or exceeds premium competitors at a fraction of the cost.

Most municipal water infrastructure is 40–80 years old. As water moves through corroded pipes, it picks up dissolved lead, copper, iron, and rust particulates — none of which are filtered out at the treatment plant.
Chlorine added at treatment plants reacts with organic matter inside aging pipes to form trihalomethanes (THMs) — compounds linked to skin sensitization, respiratory irritation, and chronic inflammation with repeated exposure.
Layers of bacteria, mineral scale, and organic deposits line the interior of old pipes. Every time you shower, a pulse of this travels through your showerhead — directly onto your skin and into the steam you breathe.
Dissolved metals bind to the hair shaft, disrupting protein bonds and accelerating breakage and thinning. On skin, chronic chlorine and heavy metal exposure degrades the stratum corneum — increasing water loss, triggering inflammation, and worsening conditions like redness, acne, and eczema.
In Their Own Words"Most people think about what's in their drinking water. Almost no one thinks about what's in the water they stand under for ten minutes a day, with their pores open and their lungs pulling steam. Chlorine, hard water minerals, and dissolved metals from aging pipes - these exposures are real and routinely overlooked."
"When VESL asked me to advise, I had one condition: the testing has to be rigorous and the claims have to be honest. That's the standard I'm holding them to."
Unscrew your existing showerhead by hand — no tools needed
Hand-tighten VESL onto your existing shower arm
Turn on the water. That's it. You're filtering.
Works with any standard ½″ shower arm. Fits in the box it ships in.
"I spent way too long researching filtered showerheads. The fact that VESL had an actual MIT chemical engineer advising on the design — not just a DTC brand with a supplier — made the decision easy. The science checks out and the price is impossible to argue with."
"I'm a biochemist and I actually read the filter specs before buying. The grain size optimization and media sequencing isn't something most shower filter brands think about. VESL clearly did. My skin noticed within two weeks."
"I've tried Jolie. I've tried Filterbaby. VESL outperforms both at a fifth of the price. The water feels the same — which makes sense, the filtration chemistry is comparable. But $49 vs $200 is not a hard call."
"My post-shower redness is almost completely gone after three weeks. I'm 47 and blamed perimenopause for everything — turns out the chlorine was a major factor. This is the most obvious thing I've done for my skin in years."
Most shower filters use a single filtration medium — typically KDF-55 or activated carbon — sourced from a commodity supplier without any optimization. VESL worked with Dr. TJ Joo (PhD Chemical Engineering MIT, Postdoc Stanford) as a scientific advisor to inform the optimization of grain size distribution, media sequencing, and contact time ratios. The result is a 5-stage system where KDF-55 grain size (50–80 mesh), GAC surface area (1,050 m²/g), and calcium sulfite concentration are tuned to work together at real shower temperatures and flow rates — not just in laboratory conditions at 25°C.
Activated carbon and Vitamin C — the two most common filtration methods for shower filters — both degrade significantly above 50–60°C. The adsorption efficiency of carbon drops as water temperature rises, and Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) oxidizes and depletes rapidly in hot water. Calcium sulfite, by contrast, performs a redox reaction that is temperature-independent. This is why VESL uses calcium sulfite as the primary dechlorination medium rather than relying solely on carbon.
TEWL stands for transepidermal water loss — the rate at which water evaporates through the skin's outer layer (stratum corneum). A healthy stratum corneum has intact lipid bilayers that prevent excessive water loss. Chlorine disrupts these lipid structures, increasing TEWL and leading to dry, reactive, and sensitive skin. Studies show a 23% reduction in TEWL when chlorine is removed from shower water, meaning the skin's barrier function measurably improves. For perimenopausal women, whose barrier function is already compromised by declining estrogen, this effect is compounded.
Every 90 days or ~10,000 gallons — whichever comes first. At our direct pricing, replacement filters are $23/quarter. That's 35% cheaper than Jolie ($35/quarter) and significantly cheaper than Filterbaby. Post-launch the filter price moves to $27/quarter — buying now locks in $23 permanently for as long as you own the showerhead.
Yes. Third-party lab test results documenting chlorine removal rates, heavy metal reduction, and flow rate are on file. We don't publish them publicly because we're not interested in being performatively transparent — we're interested in being actually transparent. Email us and we'll send the results. We think that's more honest than a PDF no one reads buried on a page.
About 60 seconds. Unscrew your current showerhead, thread VESL onto the same arm, hand-tighten. No tools, no plumber. Works on any standard ½" NPT shower arm — which covers essentially every shower in North America.
60 days, no questions. If you don't notice a difference — or just don't like it for any reason — send it back for a full refund. We think a 60-day window is the minimum fair offer for a product we're asking you to evaluate over weeks, not days.
Chrome, Brushed Gold, and Matte Black. All three are the same showerhead and the same filter — identical performance, same price.
PhD-optimized filter chemistry. No retail markup. No brand tax. $49 while this batch lasts.
