The result is a 5-stage system where KDF-55 grain size (50–80 mesh), GAC surface area (1,050 m²/g), and calcium sulfite concentration are tuned to work together at real shower temperatures and flow rates — not just in laboratory conditions at 25°C.

Activated carbon and Vitamin C — the two most common filtration methods for shower filters — both degrade significantly above 50–60°C. The adsorption efficiency of carbon drops as water temperature rises, and Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) oxidizes and depletes rapidly in hot water. Calcium sulfite, by contrast, performs a redox reaction that is temperature-independent. This is why VESL uses calcium sulfite as the primary dechlorination medium rather than relying solely on carbon.

TEWL stands for transepidermal water loss — the rate at which water evaporates through the skin's outer layer (stratum corneum). A healthy stratum corneum has intact lipid bilayers that prevent excessive water loss. Chlorine disrupts these lipid structures, increasing TEWL and leading to dry, reactive, and sensitive skin. Studies show a 23% reduction in TEWL when chlorine is removed from shower water, meaning the skin's barrier function measurably improves. For perimenopausal women, whose barrier function is already compromised by declining estrogen, this effect is compounded.
